At Casting Horizon Fishing Charter VA, your day on the water is led by two highly experienced captains whose backgrounds are built on discipline, professionalism, and a lifelong connection to the sea. Captain Mike Aderholt and Captain Chad Formentera are both retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officers and U.S. Coast Guard-licensed 25-Ton Master Captains. Their military careers instilled a deep commitment to safety, preparation, and leadership that now serves every guest who steps aboard. Whether you are new to fishing or a seasoned angler, you can fish with confidence knowing your trip is guided by professionals who have spent decades navigating challenging waters and leading crews in demanding environments.
Together, Captain Mike and Captain Chad bring more than 40 years of combined experience fishing the Chesapeake Bay, its tributaries, and the Atlantic waters off Virginia Beach. Raised on the Chesapeake Bay, Captain Mike developed his passion for fishing at an early age and has spent a lifetime learning the seasonal movements of local species. Captain Chad, originally from California, honed his skills fishing the productive waters of Long Beach and San Diego before relocating to Virginia in 2016, where he quickly developed extensive knowledge of Chesapeake Bay and East Coast fisheries. Their combined expertise allows them to consistently put anglers on fish while sharing valuable insights into local techniques, conditions, and fish behavior.
Beyond their extensive experience, both captains are passionate educators and advocates for the fishing community. Captain Mike serves as a certified powerboat safety and sailing instructor for the U.S. Navy MWR program, helping others develop confidence and skills on the water. Captain Chad is an active member of the Virginia FilAm Fishing Association, where he mentors fellow anglers and supports local fishing initiatives. Their patient, approachable style makes them excellent guides for families, first-time anglers, and experienced fishermen alike. Every trip is designed to be safe, enjoyable, and educational while creating lasting memories on the water.
Aboard the 27-foot Sea Hunt Gamefish, guests enjoy a fast, comfortable, and highly capable fishing platform designed specifically for Virginia Beach fishing charters. This meticulously maintained 2017 center console is powered by twin 250 HP Yamaha outboards, reaching speeds of up to 58 knots to maximize fishing time and minimize travel. The spacious deck comfortably accommodates up to six guests and is equipped with advanced Garmin GPS and fish-finding electronics, premium live wells, and large fish boxes. Family-friendly amenities include cushioned seating and a private enclosed head, ensuring a comfortable experience whether you are targeting Black Sea Bass, Red Drum, Spadefish, or other Chesapeake Bay favorites. Combined with the knowledge of Captains Mike and Chad, this vessel delivers a safe, productive, and memorable Virginia Beach fishing charter experience.

Premium Fishing Gear: We provide rods, reels, and tackle. You will have full access to our bottom-fishing setups and flutter jigs designed for wreck fishing.

Fish Cleaning & Filleting: At the end of the trip, your captain can help fillet and clean your catch.
What to Bring Along
Snacks and Meals: Bring along your favorite food, sandwiches, and snacks to keep your energy up. For full-day trips, a hearty lunch is highly recommended.
Hydration and Drinks: Hydration & Beverages: We recommend bringing plenty of water, sports drinks, or other non-alcoholic beverages to stay hydrated throughout your trip. Guests of legal drinking age may bring beer or other canned alcoholic beverages and consume them responsibly. For safety reasons, glass bottles are strictly prohibited on board.
Alcohol consumption must not interfere with the fishing experience or the safety of the vessel and its passengers. The captain reserves the right to limit or stop alcohol consumption by any guest whose behavior becomes unsafe, disruptive, or negatively impacts the trip.
Sun & Element Protection
Sunscreen: Bring lotion-style sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). Please avoid spray sunscreen, as it makes the boat deck slick and stains the marine upholstery.
Polarized Sunglasses: Essential for cutting down water glare and helping you spot fish or structure under the surface.
Hats and Face Coverings: A wide-brimmed hat or lightweight fishing neck gaiter provides critical defense against prolonged sun exposure.
Clothing & Footwear
Non-Marking Shoes: Wear closed-toe shoes or boat deck shoes with light-colored, non-marking rubber soles. Dark-soled shoes can leave permanent scuffs on the fiberglass.
Weather Layers: Temperatures on the open water can feel significantly cooler than on land, especially during morning departures. Bring a windbreaker, light jacket, or rain gear just in case.
Logistics & Personal Items
A Shore Cooler: Leave a large cooler inside your vehicle at Fisherman's Wharf Marina. While we keep your fish iced on the boat, you will need a cooler to transport your fresh fillets safely home.
Seasickness Prevention: If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking a preventative medication (like Dramamine or Bonine) the night before and an hour before step boarding.
Camera or Smartphone: Fully charge your device to capture high-resolution photos of your catch and the local scenery.
Cash for Gratuities: While not mandatory, it is customary in the maritime charter industry to tip your captain or crew 15% to 20% for excellent service, hard work, and for fishing preparation.
DEPOSIT: A deposit is required for all bookings and will be applied at checkout
BALANCE: The remaining balance is due on the trip date as either Credit or Cash.
GUEST CANCELLATION: In the event that you must cancel your booking, you must do so 7 days prior to your trip date to receive a refund on your deposit. Rescheduling is encouraged and dependent on guide availability.
GUIDE CANCELLATION: In the rare event that your guide must cancel due to inclement weather, health, or equipment issues, you will have the option to reschedule your charter for a later date or receive a refund on your deposit.
TIPPING: Tips to your guide are greatly appreciated for your quality trip.
